GAYLORD WINTERBERG
maintenance team leader,
Elco Textron

As co-worker Mike Volsch tells it, there may not be a better troubleshooter than Gaylord Winterberg. Whether it’s heat treat furnaces, CNC machines or anything in between, Gay’s the guy. But that’s just part of what makes the 30-year veteran so valuable to Elco Textron, a maker of engineered assemblies and components.

Winterberg’s a team leader in the truest sense.

"His best attribute is how he works with fellow employees to solve problems," Volsch says.

Winterberg, who oversees a crew of five, helps less-seasoned maintenance workers experience success.

"I won’t walk the guy through and find the problem for him," says Winterberg, 48. "I’m there for him, but what I want to do is ask him questions of what he should check and what the problem is and get him to take that next step forward. I want him to think a little differently. I try to put in his mind, ‘What would Gay do right now?’ Take it one step further, check out one more thing that may have been overlooked. When they find the solution, their confidence grows. It helps with the next job and the next job. The person grows."
