Gallaher, Burmood join
speaker list for LMU4 conference

Rex Gallaher, the former manager of the United States Postal Service's Maintenance Technical Support Center and one of the most respected people in the maintenance community, will provide a keynote address at "Lean Manufacturing University 4: Bringing Lean into Maintenance," MRO Today magazine's national "best practices in lean" conference. The event takes place May 23-25 at the Flamingo Resort in Las Vegas.

Mike Burmood, the facilities manager for the Raytheon Company's 3 million-square-foot missile systems site in Tucson, Ariz., will also speak at LMU4. Burmood will present a case study on that plant's use of agile and Six Sigma techniques in its maintenance operations.

Gallaher retired from the USPS in 2004 and currently runs an education and training company based in Washington. While with the USPS, Gallaher oversaw its Maintenance Technical Support Center, a Norman, Oklahoma-based hub that provides methods, documentation, technology and processes to optimize the field maintenance operations at all USPS processing facilities. MTSC annually has responsibility for depot repair of 150,000 assemblies.

Gallaher, the 2001 winner of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' coveted Frederick P. Smarro Award, will speak on the importance of skills and personal development in a lean program. "Respect for people" and "the maximization of human capital" are two of the most important (and forgotten) drivers in a lean system. While many believe they actively engage in seeking solutions from their human capital, proactive thinkers such as Gallaher stress identifying the root cause of how to unleash true potential.

Alcoa, Ogihara leaders to speak at LMU lean maintenance conference

Marme Peerman, a maintenance area coordinator for Alcoa, and Warren Landry Jr., a Total Productive Management coordinator for Ogihara America Corporation, are among the industrial leaders who have agreed to present case studies at MRO Today magazine's next conference, "Lean Manufacturing University 4: Bringing Lean into Maintenance."

The conference will be held May 23-25 at the Flamingo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. This is the fourth in MRO Today's series of national symposiums on lean manufacturing best practices. Over the past two years, more than 250 North American companies have attended MRO Today LMU conferences.

Peerman has played a key role as Alcoa's Warrick Operations in Newburgh, Ind., changed its maintenance strategy from two-day weekend outages to multiple, weekday short-burst outages on a production center that moved from a continuous operation to a customer-demand (pull system) operation.

"One of the resounding themes in the manufacturing arena in the early 21st century is the need for rapid and effective change," states Peerman. "The application of lean manufacturing concepts is a cornerstone providing a systematic approach to sustain required changes and add flexibility to new concepts."

Landry was instrumental in Ogihara-Alabama winning the 2003 Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance Award for TPM Excellence. He is also helping the division pursue the Alabama Quality Award as well as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Ogihara America is a Tier 1 supplier to Mercedes Benz, Saturn and Nissan.

"This is a six-year road map that I know we are able to achieve," says Landry. "A workforce that keeps the 'end in mind' obtains its goals."

Pre-conference workshops

Pre-conference workshops will be held on Monday, May 23.

The content for the two pre-conference workshops are as follows:

Morning workshop: "Lubrication¹s role in a lean manufacturing initiative"

Instructor: Drew Troyer, Noria Corporation

About this workshop: The elimination of waste and lost opportunities lies at the heart of a lean manufacturing initiative. To achieve those goals, effective and dependable mechanical/electrical machines and manufacturing systems are required. Lubrication is a fundamental but often trivialized aspect of mechanical system reliability. It is truly a cornerstone of dependability.

This presentation will serve as a primer on machinery lubrication and include the following topics:
• optimizing task method and interval selection;
• work plan creation and management;
• effective incorporation of technology;
• skills management; and,
• overall initiative continuous improvement.

This interactive workshop is beneficial for all levels of a maintenance or production/operations organization.

About the instructor: Drew Troyer vice president of Noria Corporation. He is devoted to improving machinery reliability through the deployment of precision lubrication. His clients include Cargill, Goodyear, International Paper and Southern Companies. Projects he commonly works on include: plant audits and gap analysis, machinery lubrication program design, oil analysis program design, contamination control system design, PM rationalization and redesign, economic analysis, facilitation of supplier selection and educating senior management about the initiative¹s benefits and implementation.

About Noria: Noria is the world¹s leading source of information about industrial machinery lubrication and oil analysis. Its educational and consulting services enable customers to improve machine reliability and reduce downtime through effective lubrication management.

Afternoon workshop: "Skilled trades lean strategies"

Instructor: Dave Melhus, Simpler Consulting

About this workshop: Learn how to leverage the results of your maintenance organization by deploying internal and external strategies that will provide measurable improvements not only within your support group but your business unit as well.

Common comments made by skilled trades groups are that management does not understand, the technical groups do not get the appropriate level of support, or the lean initiative has limited application in our trade. This workshop will address those paradigms and assist you in developing a skilled trade strategy for their organization.

There are countless improvement initiatives that your groups could be embracing. Which is right for your team? How do you get started? This workshop will expose you to several fundamental lean principles and provide the forum to answer questions regarding what a lean skilled trade's strategy might look like.

Topics to be covered include:
• Your role in supporting and deploying lean improvement efforts.
• If you can¹t measure it, it doesn¹t count.
• Visual management: materials, machines and manpower.
• TPM assessments: How much and when?
• How to analyze and effectively lower your inventory.
• Development of your strategy.

This interactive workshop is beneficial for all levels of a maintenance organization as well as project managers.

About the instructor: Dave Melhus is vice president of Simpler Consulting. His bio is included in the list of confirmed speakers above.

About Simpler: Simpler has become the world¹s largest and fastest-growing lean-focused consulting company by holding itself accountable for helping its clients achieve lasting, measurable results and a culture of never-ending improvement. The company learned from the original key members of Toyota¹s Autonomous Study Group.
